A Creation of Cross-Cultural Costumes Integrating Ni Siap Mangrove Dye and Malaysian Batik
Inspired by the traditional Ni Siap textile heritage of Kuala Sepetang, Perak, this creative practice brings together mangrove-bark dyeing and Malaysian batik to explore new possibilities in textile art and costume design.
By integrating natural dye, traditional textile techniques, and contemporary creativity, the project transforms local ecological knowledge and cultural memory into a shared, living practice. It invites the public to rediscover the relationship between mangrove ecosystems, community heritage, and creative expression.
More than a costume, each creation represents a dialogue between nature and culture, tradition and innovation, and local identity and cross-cultural exchange.
Rooted in Perak’s historical and cultural heritage, the Kalumpang Jari flower is introduced as a signature motif in this creative collaboration, translating local identity into the visual language of Malaysian batik.
Through this ongoing collaboration, we weave together mangrove ecology, community memories, traditional craftsmanship and contemporary creativity — giving our living heritage new possibilities for the future.
