On July 15, 2024, three passionate practitioners were invited to share their expertise in fabric and textile crafting with the local communities of Kuala Sepetang. Eliza Allias from Ghomah Batik (Manjung, Perak), Kak Tanti from Batik Tanuntaya (Taiping, Perak), and the couple Chingwei and Barley from Cibabond Studio (Semenyih, Selangor) came together for this enriching exchange.
The event was initiated and led by the Look Port Weld project director Choong Pai Chee and Kuala Sepetang local artisan Go Tyan Yin , who has been tirelessly promoting the traditional natural fabric dyeing technique known as “Ni Siap” through demonstrations and workshops both within and beyond Kuala Sepetang. Look Port Weld focused on teaching traditional tie-dye fabric-making using mangrove bark, known locally as “Ni Siap.” “Ni” means dyeing, and “Siap” refers to the texture left on fabrics after dyeing. The sharing session began with each invited artisan conducting an introductory workshop in their respective crafts. Kak Tanti guided a traditional batik painting session, Eliza showcased eco-printing on fabric, and Cibabond demonstrated contemporary batik art-making techniques. Each workshop concluded with a collaborative creation, where participants worked alongside their mentoring artisan to integrate the local “Ni Siap” technique into their projects.
This year we received sponsorship from Dana Kreatif Perak 2025. We did the 2 days Exhibition & Workshop on Cross-Cultural and Cross-Practice sharing during MERDEKA Holiday.
Date: 30-31 August 2025
Time : 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Venue: Gazebo Taiping Lake Garden, Perak
Collaboration partners : Ghomah Batik (Manjung, Perak), Batik Tanuntaya (Taiping, Perak), Cibabond Studio (Semenyih, Selangor)
Day 1: Workshop on Natural Dye from Mangrove Bark and Traditional Batik.
Day 2: The Crossover, a Cross-Cultural Exchange Workshop among Four Craftsmen.
This event celebrated the power of cross-cultural and cross-practice sharing, allowing us to embrace each other’s stories, cultures, heritage, and sustainable innovation. By uniting diverse fabric crafting traditions, it fostered a vibrant environment for learning and inspiration.
The local “NiSiap” natural Mangrove dyeing technique, paired with the exceptional skills of invited artisans, equipped participants with invaluable practical knowledge and reignited their passion for the art of fabric craftsmanship.
We believe it is crucial to promote these practices widely within Perak’s crafts and creative products. The initiative for startups and skill development should extend beyond Kuala Sepetang and reach all districts, from Taiping to others, ensuring a thriving and interconnected creative community.
